This postmodern shift involves rethinking some sacred beliefs and structures that have been firmly set in human consciousness for at least the past five hundred years. This is not unlike the trauma that was caused in the sixteenth century by the discoveries of Copernicus and Galileo. Many astronomers were silenced, imprisoned, or excommunicated because their theories challenged the premodern worldview of the religious and political leaders of the European society. (Interestingly, it was not until October 31, 1992, 350 years after Galileo’s death, that Pope John Paul II gave an address on behalf of the Catholic Church in which he admitted that errors had been made by the theological advisers in the case of Galileo.

This fosters a willingness to try new styles and different approaches. Influences from sensory and unconscious experiences lead to new imaginative realities. Multiple forms of representation are encouraged and supported. Alternate forms of assessment and evaluation are explored. Willingness to risk and improvise are encouraged.
