Most Indians can identify which Indian state another is from, whether they are a Jain, a Parsi, a Tamil, which Hindu caste and so on, simply by that person’s surname. With that comes a whole host of other assumptions and information. The differences among Indians help to explain a lot about where and with whom they do business. Hiring practices can also be explained by looking at Indian subgroups, for it is often when Indians and overseas Indian firms choose their staff that group loyalty is at its most apparent.

It was also sluggish and old fashioned. Today, it is profitable, agile and admired. Some Asian business families do anything to avoid bankruptcy or shedding companies when they should. They do this to avoid the loss of prestige and ‘face’ in the local business community, but also to uphold the honour of the family’s ancestors. Many Asian business families would see it as unfilial to sell or liquidate a company that a grandfather or greatgrandfather had founded. It is another important motivator in corporate Asia that is at odds with the interests of outsiders.

But what let the side down was factionalism in the controlling families. There is growing recognition of the problems of family control among Asian business families themselves. The problem is what to do about it. Restructuring Asian family firms is a growing business for management consultants. Several of the bigger business families in the Philippines noticed that at their third-generation level there was much intra-family rivalry and squabbling. ‘They’re all cousins now’ was the observation – and cousins are not nearly as naturally cohesive as siblings.
