I sort of consider myself the Tarantino of animation, and I like that. But if I were starting out today and looking for work in the film business, I'd definitely start at the big, family-oriented studios. I don't like to narrow my audience, I pray for universal appeal. I hate snobbish, purist filmmakers— people who eschew wacky gags and prurient violence. They take their films way too seriously; they want their film to elevate the soul. Come on, get real! That shows a certain disdain for the common audience.
But to become players, they'll say anything to anybody, because they've become actors themselves, in the pretend world of movie production—they don't care if they lie, because they've sold their souls to the dream of one day actually being a real moviemaker. But I probably have the wrong attitude. You must believe that your project is going to make a billion dollars, that it will be the next Avatar, win an armload of Oscars, and then convince the producers of its greatness! I've heard of some animators who dress up in wild animal costumes and put on amateur theatrical productions with music from a boombox and maybe even bring in some celebrities to help get the buyers excited.
They asked me out for drinks, and I felt like I was home. The next day, I called all of my 21 magazine and newspaper clients and told them I was quitting print. ” But I said that I thought I could make a living doing animation. That goofy little film, “Your Face,” went on to get an Oscar nomination and became a big hit all over the world. I took it to Annecy, the great French animation festival—and after the screening there, many people approached me and offered all kinds of money for the TV and theatrical rights in their respective countries.
