It was in the shape of a quadrangle, which is like a rectangle with long structures built into each of its four sides.

During the 300 years that it ruled the lands, Spain had kept outsiders from traveling to Spanish territories. In contrast, the new Mexican government welcomed foreigners, including those from the newly formed United States of America. The Mexicans wanted the Americans to help them “claim” the land of the southwest, especially Texas, so that other countries would not claim it. They needed the Americans just as the Spanish needed the mission Indians to claim their land. Texas Texas, or Tejas (TAY-hahs), as the Spanish called it, played a colorful and important role in Latino history in the United States.

Because of this, thousands of Mexicans were deported, or sent back to Mex- 50 ico. Some left voluntarily, but most were forced to leave by both their local governments and the federal government. And, once again, Mexicans entered the United States in large numbers to fill now-vacant positions in factories, farms, and ranches, as well as in manufacturing industries that supported the war effort. S. fields and needed to be harvested. This was called the Bracero (brah-SAY-roh) program, and it lasted from 1942 to 1964.
